TheWorkationers originated on the sun-drenched coast of Aruba, when entrepreneurs Anke (owner of a driving school for expats and internationals) and Marwin (interim online & commercial director) wiggled their toes in the sand, tapped at laptops on laps and always had an espresso at arm’s reach. There, on an impulsive holiday to escape their daily routines, they confronted the questions: “Why does work always have to be in the same place?” and “Why are we locked up in a boring, unchanging office when we can work here on a beautiful beach and in an inspiring location — anywhere in the world?”
As the waves rolled across the sand, ideas rolled around in their heads. “Maybe we can find a way to keep this feeling alive.”
However, searching online for a solution was disappointing: group work retreats in villas with other faceless entrepreneurs, expensive packages aimed at large companies, or hotels that didn’t even have a desk — let alone quality entertainment.
Anke and Marwin wanted a personal touch, ergonomic chairs, unique spaces, and atmospheres that invite both work and relaxation. They wanted their wishes regarding work and relaxation to be met, from experiencing special (sporting) activities, local culture and people-to-people networks to easily booking culinary gems and spontaneous surprises. And so, theWorkationers was born.
The enterprising couple developed the services through many test stays in Valencia, Cologne, Helsinki, Curaçao and Aruba, among others. Lieve, was appointed as operations manager and travel specialist — it’s a family business, after all.
